Por fin es carnaval - Lesson #6

Lesson 6-Activities

  • Divide the class into eight groups of students and give group a page of text from the book. (Provide a copy for each student in the group.) Simplify the text if necessary for your class. Assign cooperative learning roles to each student in the group such as: materials gather, recorder, reporter, time keeper, praiser, person in charge of making sure everyone is participating, etc.
  • Discuss reading strategies with the class such as:
  • -looking at the pictures to find out what the text is about;
    -scanning the text for familiar words and/or unfamiliar words;
    -reading the first sentences of each paragraph before reading the entire text;
  • Have each group skim their text in order to choose the picture that they think goes with it;
  • Give them additional reading strategies to try for a few minutes at a time before they read the entire text. Provide dictionaries to look up words and/or allow them to ask you questions;
  • Ask each group to write a summary (3-5 sentences) about their text;
  • Have the reporter from each group show the picture and read the summary;
  • After a reporter reads the summary have the class decide on one sentence that describes the picture best and to write the sentence on an index card;
  • Have two group members from each group hold their pictures and index cards and all of the pairs order themselves in the sequence of the story.
  • Read the story to the class.
  • Discuss how the boy in the story woke up and what he was thinking about.

Assessment

  • Are the students in the groups doing their jobs as well as participating in the reading tasks?; Are they speaking Spanish? Is their summary concise and well written?

Objectives Students will:

  • work in groups to read and understand text from the story;
  • use reading strategies ;
  • summarize the text;
  • report the summary to the class;
  • organize themselves according to the sequence of the story;
  • enjoy listening to the teacher read the story.

Language

  • text from the book
  • description of reading strategies in Spanish or English
  • summary sentences

Materials

  • Copies of text from the book for each student in each group;
  • chart paper on which to write reading strategies
