Lesson 4-Activities
- Show the third (gathering wood and washing clothes) and fourth (preparing food) pictures to the students and follow the same procedure as in the previous activity;
- Begin a T-chart of the work the people in the pictures are doing.
- Ask students to draw a picture or to create computer-generated images of the kind of work they and their family members do and to write 3-5 sentences about it.
- Begin a telling-chain activity in which one student shares one sentence about her or his picture, the next student repeats the previous sentence(s) and adds a sentence, etc.
- Have a student scribe add this information to the right side of the T-chart as the sharing continues. Highlight any work that is the same on both sides.
Assessment
- Put the pictures on the wall and have the students assess their peers' work using criteria previously defined by them such as, if the picture is interesting, if it shows time and effort, if the sentences include detail; etc.
- Can the students repeat their peers' sentences with good pronunciation and intonation?
Additional Activities:
- Prepare quinoa with the students. Quinoa is an ancient grain grown by the Incas. It is full of vitamins and is being used again today in many cereals and breads. Have the students go to a health food store and report on the products they find there made from quinoa. Can they discover any other grains grown by the Incas?
