2. Activities:
- Introduce the story using puppets of each character (scanned colored pictures of characters mounted on cardboard with popsicle stick handles) whose description follows the word "mira" in the story such as; the doctor, the plane, the woman, and the bird. Then do a TPR series with the puppets: Ask students to touch (Toca la señora.), point to (Señalen el doctor.), or put a puppet on the desk (Pon el hombre en el pupitre.).
- Distribute puppets to students around the classroom. Ask who has each puppet (¿Quién tiene el gato?). Ask yes/no questions about the colors of the characters clothing (¿Es negro?) and the size of the animals (¿Es grande?). Ask either/or questions about clothing of the puppets and the animals (¿Es negro o blanco? ¿Es grande o pequeño?) Ask students questions about how many puppets there are in total (¿Cuántas personas/títeres hay en total?).
- Begin a T chart with the students that lists words in Spanish on one side and cognates in English on the other. Add to the chart throughout the lessons.
Assessment:
Observe the students’ responses to the TPR. Can they follow directions correctly or do they need a visual prompt? Can they answer the questions on their own or do they need assistance?
