Mira Activity Plan #1
1. Activities:
Show the cover of the Mira book to the students. Point to the window in the classroom and the boy looking out of the window on the cover and explain (with actions and words) that he is sick and can’t go to school so he is looking out the window. (El chico está enfermo y no puede ir a la escuela. El mira por la ventana.) Look out of the window in the classroom with the students and describe what you see or ask them what they see.
  • Give the students each a blank picture of a window. Explain to them that they are sick and cannot go to school like the boy in the story and ask them to take the window home and draw something they see outside their own bedroom window that would make them happy and feel better. (Todos están enfermos como el chico en el cuento y no pueden ir a la escuela. Dibujen algo que ven de la ventana que les hace sentir mejor.) Their drawings may be realistic or imaginative. (Sus dibujos pueden ser de algo real (o verdadero) o de algo de la imaginación.)
  • Then, on the chalkboard, make a tally of what types of things the students "saw" outside their windows. For example, did more students see nature? or something imaginary (¿Quién vió algo dela imaginación?, ¿Quién vió algo de la naturaleza?, ¿Cuántas personas vieron algo de la naturaleza?)

Assessment:
Observe the students. Are they understanding your explanation? Are they providing information for the tally activities? Are they answering with one-word answers or sentences?

Objectives: TLW listen to, understand, and respond to the word "draw" (dibuja) and will create a scene outside a window as a pre-reading activity for the story Mira.

Language in Use: Todos están enfermos como el chico en el cuento y no pueden ir a la escuela. Dibujen algo que ven de la ventana que les hace sentir mejor Sus dibujos pueden ser de algo real (o verdadero) o de algo de la imaginación.

Materials: Blank picture of window, crayons/ colored pencils/ markers

Standards:
Communication 1.2:  Students understand and interpret spoken language on about the drawing activity.
Communication 1.1:  Students provide information about what they saw out their windows.
